What Makes A Pair Of Headphones Good?

  • Sound Quality: How good the overall audio quality of music, phone calls, or video.
  • Comfort: The ability to remain comfortable for extended periods of time without itchiness, annoyance, or ear pain.
  • Build Quality: The overall durability and longevity. Able to withstand harsh conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Noise Isolation/ Active Noise Cancelling: If any at all, how well the active noise cancelling or noise isolating abilities are.
  • Battery Life: How long the battery life of the pair of headphones is at a full charge.
  • Added Features: A few examples of added features headphones offer can be Bluetooth capabilities, built-in AI assistant, headphone controls, built-in microphone for phone calls, flexibility, rotatable ear cups, etc.

We compared and contrasted each of these factors for the Avantree aptX, Mpow 059, & Silensys E7 PRO

Sound Quality

Especially for music listeners, the overall quality of sound is a massive factor in finding your perfect pair of headphones. There are various factors that impact a pair of headphones’ sound quality.

Avantree aptX
These headphones produce very clear and high-quality sound. It uses 40mm drivers and Hi-Fi technology for its high-quality audio. Keep in mind that these headphones and every other low-budget pair of headphones do not compete in audio quality compared to more expensive top-tier headphones. However, for the low-price, the Avantree aptX sound is very good. The lower mids have a minor boost to them. Some people like the lower mid boost, others don’t. The highs are nice and crisp without sounding too harsh. Overall, it has a great sound quality for the price.

Mpow 059
These headphones are not one of the most popular and highly rated pairs on the market for nothing. The Mpow 059 has an excellent sound quality for the low price. It has 40mm neodymium drivers and Hi-Fi audio technology that produce a powerful and clear sound. If I had to critique the audio, the mids slightly lack. However, the average person who does not compare and contrast headphones and music gear on a daily basis most likely wouldn’t care. Most standard customer reviewers are a big fan of the audio.

Silensys E7 PRO
For the affordable price, the Silensys E7 PRO produces great sound quality. It has 45mm large-aperture drivers that provide an accurate and responsive deep bass. One thing I noticed was when the volume was turned to the max without noise-canceling, the audio got a bit boomy. Around 90% volume and down, the sound quality was very good with excellent bass response. However, when the active noise-cancellation is turned on, the music sounds a bit more hollow and loses some of the mids/highs.

Overall, the Silensys E7 PRO and Avantree aptX are tied for best sound quality

Comfort

The ability for headphones to remain comfortable for extended periods of time without itchiness, annoyance, pressure, or ear pain. Considering many people use headphones for commute, air travel, or work; Comfort is a vital factor.

Avantree aptX
Mainly due to the incredibly soft ear pads and adjustable headband, I was very impressed by how comfortable these headphones are. The Avantree aptX is very lightweight and has just the right amount of clamping force for my head. Considering the earpads don’t press on the ear, it can be easily worn for extended periods. These headphones are easily able to be worn without discomfort for periods of roughly 5 hours.

Mpow 059
These headphones are very comfortable to wear, and they cover the ears. With the soft synthetic leather earpads, they are very comfortable. They don’t get sweaty or itchy after extended periods, whether you wear glasses or not. However, after a few hours, the shallow earcups build a bit of pressure. You may need to take a break every 4-8 hours. Overall, I give it an 8 out of 10 for comfort.

Silensys E7 PRO
One of my favorite things about the Silensys E7 PRO is its comfort. The faux leather material in the ear cups feels very nice on your ears. Many people even go as far as to sleep with them. I’m also a big fan of how thick the ear padding is. The soft top headband fits very well, while the earcups feel like clouds. Overall, I give the comfort a solid 8.5 out of 10.

Overall, the Silensys E7 PRO is the most comfortable.

Build Quality

What good are your amazingly sounding headphones if they break in a few months? The overall durability and longevity are crucial for any investment you make. Especially for those who need headphones for commute, it’s important they’re able to withstand vigorous traveling conditions consistently.

Avantree aptX
These headphones have a decent build quality. For the price, they are relatively sturdy while maintaining their lightweight. I don’t see any signs of longevity issues for at-home use. It has a rubberizing coating on the black plastic for added protection. The headband is soft, which is another reason many enjoy their comfort. I don’t believe these headphones are able to handle vigorous conditions. If you’re planning on traveling often, I don’t recommend these headphones. I give the build a 5.5 out of 10.

Mpow 059
One of the main factors that keep the Mpow 059 at a low price is its plastic build quality. However, it is a sturdy plastic that feels quite durable for its low-price. A tough metal supports the hinges, and the buttons are sturdy. Overall, the build quality and longevity are more than acceptable for the affordable price with a 7 out of 10. According to our research, these headphones are able to withstand traveling conditions.

Silensys E7 PRO
The durability and longevity of these headphones are surprisingly very good. However, there is a minor trade-off for their more robust than expected build. They are a bit heavy and bulky but don’t let the picture fool you. They are much smaller and compact in person. A convenient factor is the rotatable ear cups. They can swivel 90-degrees allowing you to place them comfortably around your neck. There are two different ways to turn the headphones on; Either Bluetooth mode or active noise-canceling mode. Overall, I give the build quality a 7.5 out of 10.

Overall, the Silensys E7 PRO has the best build quality.

Noise Isolation/ Active Noise Cancelling

Don’t be confused between active noise cancelling and noise isolation headphones. They are both entirely different. Noise-cancelling technology is very unique. Unlike noise-isolating headphones, noise-cancelling headphones do not eradicate outside noise by physical insulation. Within the ear cups, they have a mini microphone that picks up the outside environmental noise. It then triggers a frequency entirely opposite to the outside ambient noise. Thus, canceling out most outside ambient sound.

Avantree aptX
These headphones do not provide active noise cancelling. However, they offer adequate passive noise-isolation. After putting them on, they naturally reduce outside noise by a decent amount. They don’t block out as much noise as active noise-cancelling headphones. I give the passive noise-isolation abilities a 6.5 out of 10. In other words, I recommend them for anyone who only wants to diminish the outside environmental noise lightly.

Mpow 059
The Mpow 059 headphones do not provide active noise cancelling. Although these are closed-back headphones, their passive noise isolation is slightly poor. Some really enjoy the isolation, but many don’t believe it’s nearly enough. However, it does eradicate a sizeable amount of ambient noise. You will also get a bit of noise bleeding. At high volumes, people around you may hear a bit of what you’re listening to. Overall, I give the passive noise-isolation abilities a 4 out of 10.

Silensys E7 PRO
The Silensys E7 PRO has active noise cancelling abilities. It eradicates an enormous amount of lower frequency hums and ambient sounds. However, while it is still reduced, the mid and upper frequencies can still be heard. This includes the human voice, beeping cars, etc. Like mentioned before, the music loses a bit of its meat once the active noise cancelling is initiated. However, it was easily fixed after a bit of EQ.

Overall, the Silensys E7 PRO has the best active noise cancelling.

Battery Life

Battery life is an overlooked subject when speaking about over-ear headphones. Obviously, the only headphones that have a battery life are those which are wireless. Many headphones on the market do not have wireless capabilities. But for those who do, a more extended battery-life becomes a convenient factor.

Avantree aptX
Something quite remarkable about this pair is its incredibly long battery life of 40 hours. The Avantree aptX is one of the few headphones on the market with 40 hours of battery life. Lastly, I love how quickly these headphones charge. It only takes about 2-hours to charge fully.

Mpow 059
These headphones offer a solid 15-20 hours of battery life.

Silensys E7 PRO
The Silensys E7 PRO offers a solid battery life span of 30 hours.

Overall, the Avantree aptX has the most-extended battery life.

Added Features/ Summary

Here we summarize each pair of headphones and talk about some of the added features.

Avantree aptX
Avantree is so confident about the aptX that it comes with a 2-year warranty. The built-in microphone only works while the headphones are in Bluetooth mode, not wired. In my experience, the built-in microphone worked surprisingly well. Typically headphones at this cheap of a price have minor issues with the built-in mic. However, I had no complaints at all while using mine for phone calls. The people I spoke to said the difference was very minimal but nothing to be concerned with.

Mpow 059
Coming in 8 different colors, the Mpow 059 is one of the most popular and affordable pairs of headphones on the entire market. They offer Bluetooth V4.1 capabilities giving 30-33 feet of wireless range. However, with a 3.5mm auxiliary cord, they can be wired, as well. The functions on the headphones consist of volume, back, forward, play, pause, and call. I’m surprised that the built-in microphone works very well for phone calls. I did have a few people on the other side of the phone call saying it was a bit hard to hear me while I was driving. However, the majority of the time, I had no complaints.

Silensys E7 PRO
One of the most famous pair of affordable noise-cancelling headphones on the market, the Silensys E7 PRO is the safest overall choice for the money. These headphones offer a solid Bluetooth 4.0 connection. It also has a great built-in microphone that produces clear quality phone calls. You can get these headphones in 7 different colors. Frequent flyers who don’t want to pay too much for headphones tend to gravitate towards the Silensys E7 PRO for a few reasons. They are comfortable, they have decent active noise-cancelling, they are wireless, and they produce quality sound clarity.
